About Doi Mae Salong Forest Reserve

Doi Mae Salong Forest Reserve is located in the northernmost part of Thailand within Chiang Rai Province, near the border with Myanmar and Laos. The reserve covers rugged mountainous terrain with elevations ranging from approximately 600 to 1,367 meters above sea level. The forest area supports a mixed evergreen forest ecosystem interspersed with cultivated tea plantations, fruit orchards, and ethnic hill tribe villages. The region is historically significant as the settlement area of Kuomintang soldiers who retreated from China in the mid-20th century and established a unique Sino-Thai cultural presence. Visitors to Doi Mae Salong can explore scenic hiking trails that traverse dense forest, terraced tea gardens, and remote hill tribe communities, offering a blend of outdoors and cultural tourism. Notable landmarks include tea plantations where visitors can sample local teas, viewpoints with panoramic vistas of the surrounding highlands, and traditional markets selling local crafts and produce. The forest reserve is also home to diverse wildlife including bird species, small mammals, and a variety of tropical plants. Its location and moderate climate make it popular for trekking, photography, and experiencing northern Thailand’s hill country culture. Access is commonly from the nearby towns of Mae Chan and Chiang Rai, with accommodations available in village guesthouses. The reserve’s combination of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and outdoor activities provides visitors with a distinctive northern Thailand experience.
